The eighth Suffolk Indoor Rowing Championships, held at the DRC on Saturday 9 April, brought together some 20 competitors ranging in age from 12 to 62 in wonderfully friendly competition, with a good number from Alton Water RC joining us.
Mutual support was the name of the game as the clubhouse rang to the shouts and encouragements of competitors and spectators alike. After lead organiser Neil Cawthorn's stirring call to arms, no one could resist the draw of competition, and Jacq Barnard's expert management of the ergos and the big screen brought race after race to life. DRC had a very successful day at Norwich on Saturday, which resulted in us bringing ten pots back to Woodbridge.
The event offered a morning and afternoon division with either a long (5k) or short (2k) course. Each crew had to row either 7k or 4k to their respective start lines and wait for an hour before racing but thankfully the day was bright and sunny which helped to take the chill out of the wind that was a little harsh at times!
It was nice to have several new scullers taking part and an excellent land crew to help the day run smoothly.
Well done to all our pot... more
This weekend the club went to the Ely Small Boats Head for the first time, this was inspired by experiencing the river Ouse at the Great Ouse Marathon in the summer. Ely have a long stretch of beautiful water to train on which allows spectators to follow the race along a parallel road and a series of convenient bridges.
The day was spilt into three divisions with the first and third being 5k and the middle division a 3k race aimed at junior crews. The weather wasn’t brilliant with a strong headwind and rain at times but everyone took this in their stride and put in maximum effort.... more
This weekend several crews took part in the Norfolk Long Distance Sculls in Norwich. Unusually the number of senior entries equaled that of the junior section with athletes ranging between 15 and 60 years old which made for a lovely day out as everyone pitched in to help one another get on the water.
The day turned out to be much warmer and sunnier than expected so there were discarded thermals scattered everywhere but with such lovely flat water at high tide we managed to bring home several pots for Deben (results at bottom of email).
Particular mention goes to Rachel Andvig... more
This weekend Holme Peirrepoint, Nottingham hosted the National Schools Regatta over three days, 22nd to 24th May, with races for crews from J14 to J18 in boats of all classes over 2000m, with crews from clubs and schools across England, Scotland and Wales. This is one big event! To be in a position to race at this Nat Schools is an achievement in itself, as it attracts all the very top crews. Deben RC had two athletes competing, Katy Wilkinson-Feller in Championships Girls Single Sculls (J18) and Tristan Hilger in Junior under 16 Single Sculls. This was the second time Katy has been to Nat... more
Over the weekend I travelled up to Nottingham with Katy and Tristan to Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre for Nottingham City and Nottingham Masters and Club Regatta, 2km and 1km courses respectively, over 6 lanes.
Saturday saw testing conditions with a strong wind blowing across the lake moving round to a head wind later in the day. Tristan was first up, racing at 14:35 in the heats for J17 1x final, against competitors from Trentham BC and Star Club. He finished third with a very commendable time of 9:21.75, especially when you take into account he was racing athletes a... more
The seventh Suffolk Indoor Championships were held at the DRC on Saturday 28th March. The clubhouse was heaving with competititors and spectators who watched the races unfold on the large screen. This year the Burton Challenge Bowl was won by Andy Spencer (DRC) in the masters C category with Malcolm Pidd as runner up in the masters D category. Although no records were broken this year it was a closely fought race that kept the crowd guessing until the last second.
Two competitors, Katy Wilkinson Feller and Charlie Linsell, exceeded the British Rowing standard times with Benedict... more
